FAQ

Common Questions

How much does it cost?

There’s no price list, because what your dog needs depends entirely on where you’re starting from and what you’re dealing with. A dog who pulls on the lead and one who can’t cope at the sight of another dog need different amounts of support, and I’d rather understand your situation before recommending anything.

We talk about it properly on the free consultation call. It’s 20 minutes, it costs nothing, and there’s no pressure at the end of it. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll tell you.

How long will it take?

That depends on your dog, and it’s one of the first things we’ll sort out. On our free consultation call I’ll ask about what’s going on, and once I understand what we’re dealing with I’ll tell you how long I think we’ll need. You’ll know the plan before you commit to anything.

What I won’t do is put a number on it before I’ve met your dog. Most owners do start noticing things shifting sooner than they expected.

Do you come to me?

Yes. Your first session is on Zoom so I can understand your dog’s history and what you’re dealing with properly. After that I come to you, and to the places where you and your dog actually struggle, because that’s where the training needs to work.

I cover the City of Edinburgh and surrounding areas. There’s no extra charge for my travel or parking.

Can you guarantee results?

While I can’t guarantee that your dog’s behaviour will become perfect, I can guarantee that I will give you the knowledge, tools and support you need to help your dog progress towards your goals.

Every dog is different, and progress depends on three things:

  • Your individual dog. Their temperament, age, experiences and learning abilities.
  • What happens between sessions. Regular practice helps both you and your dog form new habits and build skills.
  • Your communication with me. The more open and honest you are about your dog’s behaviour, the better able I am to help you both.

My role is to show you how to help your dog and support you throughout the process. Your role is to put those strategies into practice in everyday life between our sessions. Together we can work towards meaningful, lasting change that fits into your everyday life.

What if I fall behind between sessions?

Life doesn’t always go to plan. Sometimes work, family, illness or a busy week means you don’t get to practise as much as you wanted. Don’t worry, I’m here to help.

My style of dog training is all about fitting training into your life so it’s easy for you to practise, and I’m here to support you along the way. If things don’t go to plan, we simply pick up from where you and your dog are now. There’s no judgement from me. We’ll adjust the plan as needed so we work at a pace that suits you and your dog, and you can keep moving forwards.

What methods do you use?

I’m a positive reinforcement based trainer. Rather than telling your dog what to do all the time and relying on classic obedience style training, I work on helping your dog make good decisions for themselves, building their confidence, regulating their emotions and learning how to cope in situations they find difficult. A dog who can’t manage how they feel will struggle to listen to you no matter how much training they’ve had.

I don’t use any aversive equipment that will cause pain, fear or discomfort to your dog. If your dog is uncomfortable, they will struggle to learn effectively.

Most importantly, I’ll show you how to apply my methods to real life situations, so you know how to support your dog in the real world.
