How to prepare your dog for Halloween

Halloween can be a tricky time for our dogs. Think of all the strange things your dog will have to manage:
- Trick or treaters knocking your door
- People in costumes
- Decorations outside houses
- Busier streets with people trick or treating
It’s important to plan ahead so that you and your dog can enjoy Halloween instead of dreading it!
How to Train in Advance
Think about training you can do now that will help your dog when Halloween comes.
- For example, if your dog barks at the door, consider working on their door training.
- Or if your dog struggles with people in costumes, gradually get them used to it in a safe, controlled, manageable way.
- Or if your dog is wary of pumpkins on people’s doorsteps, get them used to one in your garden.
Managing Halloween on the Day

Consider whether your dog (and you!) can cope with trick or treaters coming to your door. If you don’t want them to come, put out a sign explaining why and asking them not to knock.
Think about the timing of your dog’s walk. You might need to walk them earlier than usual to avoid busy streets and lots of people in costumes. You could also consider the location of their walk and try to choose a quieter location.
Doggy Costumes
Just because you see other dogs in costumes doesn’t mean your dog will enjoy it. Costumes can be uncomfortable and stressful for our dogs.
